I think the author chose to end the story at the climax because he wants the reader to be creative and determine the resolution based on the feelings of the princess. He was hoping the reader will be able to imagine what will happen next. The ending was in the hands of the reader now, and he wanted to know how they would end the story if it was up to them.I think this technique works most of the time because some readers like to know the ending and don't want to get stuck wandering what's going to happen next.
I agree with your post in behold of "Author's Choices". This are the types of stories that actually leave you with that suspense cloud in your head, and it makes you wonder what would happen. I believe the same thing as well. Most author's use this technique to leave the story in the hands of the reader.
